How softball recruiting really works
Softball recruiting mirrors baseball in structure — tools first, evaluated at travel-ball showcases — but NCAA Division I rules hold all recruiting contact until 1 p.m. Central on September 1 of junior year, and offers come quickly once it opens. Pitching velocity and movement, exit velocity, 60 time and pop time build your profile; PGF, the Alliance and USA Softball events are where staffs watch. D1 rosters are capped at 25, and most programs still split their money into partial awards.

What to do each year — the recruiting clock in this sport is earlier than most families expect.
Get on a strong travel team and attend a first showcase for baseline numbers. Build a recruiting profile and short skills video. D1 staffs are already evaluating.
Email 30–50 programs across D1, D2, D3 and JUCO your numbers, position and film before each showcase. Attend camps at target schools. D1 coaches can watch you but cannot contact you yet.
D1 calls, messages and visits open at 1 p.m. Central on September 1. Peak circuit year — prospect camps at your top schools and official visits. Keep every number current.
D2/D3/NAIA recruiting is active — convert interest at camps and commit when playing time and aid line up.
If uncommitted, focus D2/D3/NAIA/JUCO and keep showcasing; a senior-year velo or bat jump reopens doors.
Where you fit: softball scholarships by level
D1 softball rosters are capped at 25. Schools that opted into the 2025 House settlement have no scholarship cap, but most programs still split their money into partial awards across the roster. D1 schools that did not opt in (12 equivalency scholarships) and all of D2 (7.2) follow the older model. NAIA allows 10. D3 offers no athletic scholarships — academic and need-based aid only. NAIA and NJCAA (junior college) are separate associations, unaffected by the settlement, and their scholarship rules stand.

D2 and D3 programs frequently offer more playing time and a stronger aid package than a partial D1 ride.
With offers coming early in junior year, keep your core-course GPA above the NCAA minimums (2.3 for D1, 2.2 for D2) across your 16 core courses from 9th grade and register with the NCAA Eligibility Center (D1 and D2) early. D3 and academic programs will also evaluate you through regular admissions.
Softball recruiting mistakes to avoid
Waiting until junior year to start. D1 coaches cannot call or write to you before September 1 of junior year, but they evaluate at showcases long before it.
Pitchers filming only velocity. Coaches want spin, movement and command from the angles they expect.
