Field hockey is a women's NCAA sport recruited almost entirely through the USA Field Hockey club pathway — Nexus events, the National Futures Championship and regional identification tournaments are where college staffs evaluate. The college game is concentrated in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, so building a real target list frequently means being open to schools outside your home region. D1 rosters are capped at 27, and top programs fully fund them.

What to do each year — the recruiting clock in this sport is earlier than most families expect.
Play club and pursue the USA Field Hockey pathway (regional and Nexus events). Start position-specific film. Keep grades strong for the academic programs where the sport lives.
Build a target list across D1, D2 and D3 — and across regions. Email coaches your club schedule, film and academic profile before every event.
Coaches can contact you from June 15 after sophomore year. Attend ID camps at your top schools, take unofficial visits, and start official visits Aug 1.
Convert interest into offers at ID camps and commit where the level, degree and aid fit.

Where you fit: field hockey scholarships by level
D1 field hockey rosters are capped at 27. Schools that opted into the 2025 House settlement have no scholarship cap, and top programs fully fund the roster — so those offers are full rides. D1 schools that did not opt in (12 equivalency scholarships) and all of D2 (6.3) still work from the older model. D3 offers no athletic scholarships — academic and need-based aid only. NAIA and NJCAA (junior college) are separate associations, unaffected by the settlement, and their scholarship rules stand.
